The penalty-kick shootout to decide a match consists of a minimum of 5 penalty kicks to be taken by each of the two teams from the penalty spot. The two teams alternate penalty kicks. So, home team first, then away team, then home team again until each team has taken 5 each.

If the score is a draw at the completion of the 5th kick, both teams take a kick until a winner is found. So, if the scores are equal at the end of each team taking 5 kicks, then you keep going until one team scores and the other team misses. Again, they would alternate who takes the kicks, home team, away team, home team, away team, etc. So, if it's 5-5 and the home team comes up and scores in sudden death and the away team lose then the home team wins, or if it's 5-5 and the home team misses and the away team scores then the away team wins. They keep going on taking penalties until one team scores and the other misses.

If one side has scored more successful kicks than the other the match possibly ends before all of its remaining kicks have been taken. This means that if the home team has scored their first three and the away team has missed their first three then it's mathematically impossible for the away team to win the game, as there are not enough penalty kicks left.
