Asta and Yuno, two young men who live in a secluded area in a village called Hagi. They live in a world ruled by magic, Yuno is a genius at using magic, but Asta can't use it at all. They both strive to become the Emperor of Magic. One day, they attend the annual spell book presentation ceremony. Yuno obtains the legendary four-leaf clover spell book that belonged to the First Magic Emperor, while Asta comes out completely empty-handed. Later in the day a thief attacks Yuno to steal his book and Asta comes to his defense, and just as Asta is about to be defeated, a black spellbook bearing a black five-pointed clover appears to him.
