In March 2020, the U.S. government approved a bill to send Americans stimulus payments to provide relief for economic hardships caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Among other provisions, the CARES Act specified tax rebates of $1,200 per adult and $500 per qualifying child. The amount of the rebate phases out for incomes above $75,000 per year for individuals and $150,000 for joint filers.
Second Stimulus check
The second round of $600 stimulus checks went out in December 2020. Then, in March 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed. It included direct stimulus payments of $1,400 to people making $75,000 or less per year.
Third Stimulus check
The third round of Economic Impact Payments was authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 as an advance payment of the tax year 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.
The IRS started sending the third Economic Impact Payments to eligible individuals in March 2021 and continued sending payments throughout the year as tax returns were processed.
Fourth Stimulus check
Latest checks do not come from the federal government at the moment, like the last three stimulus checks did. This time, it all depends on what state you live in. That's right, these fourth stimulus checks are being given out to some groups of people at the state and city levels now.
It is true that the US government plans to take this check into account at the state level, at least until 2024, but so far only drafts of the project have been prepared. In any case, you should be aware of the news and communications from the governmental media.
Checks per State: Some states are giving limited stimulus checks to their citizens:
- California: people making $75,000 or less were sent a one-time check of $600 or $1,200 as part of the Golden State Stimulus I. And with the Golden State Stimulus II, they could be eligible for a second stimulus payment anywhere from $500 to $1,100. That’s on top of extra money the state paid out through the Young Child Tax Credit to those who have children age 6 or younger.
- Arizona: They’re giving them out to people who are going back to work. Arizona’s Back to Work Program is offering $2,000 to those who got a job after being on unemployment. But you have to hold down your new job for at least eight weeks before getting the benefit.
- Florida: In mid-July, they announced $450 one-time checks are being sent out to families that are caregivers, foster parents or on state assistance programs. An estimated 59,000 families will receive the payments.
- Hawaii: Single filers and heads of households who made more than $100,000 last year are eligible for $100 refunds, while those of the same categories who made less than $100,000 last year can receive $300 refunds.
- Massachusetts: Recently failed to approve $250 stimulus checks for qualifying residents, however, money is still likely to be distributed to a wide swath of their citizens.
