Times Square Wallpapers Description
At the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment hub, and neighborhood in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City. Brightly lit by numerous billboards and advertisements, it stretches from West 42nd Street to West 47th Street and is sometimes depicted as "The Crossroads of the World," "The Center of the Universe," "The heart of the Great White Road." One of the world's busiest pedestrian areas, it is also the center of the Broadway Theater District and a major attraction for the world entertainment industry. Times Square is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, attracting approximately 50 million visitors annually. About 330,000 people, mostly tourists, pass through Times Square each day, while on its peak days, more than 460,000 pedestrians walk in Times Square.
Times Square, formerly known as Longacre Square, was renamed in 1904 after the New York Times moved its headquarters to the then newly constructed Times Building, now One Times Square. This is where the annual New Year's Eve balls are held, which began on December 31, 1907, and continue to attract more than a million visitors to Times Square each year.
Times Square functions as a town square but is not geometrically a square. It is more similar to a bow tie in shape, with two triangles running north and south from 45th Street, where Seventh Avenue intersects Broadway. Broadway runs diagonally across Manhattan's horizontal and vertical street grid as defined by the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, and this intersection creates the "bow-tie" shape of Times Square.
The south triangle of Times Square does not have a specific name, but the north triangle is officially Duffy Square. It was dedicated in 1937 to Father Francis P. Duffy, World War I chaplain of New York's US 69th Infantry Regiment, and is the site of a memorial to him. There is also a statue of composer and entertainer George M. Cohan and the TKTS ticket office for Broadway theatres.
