In some cells at the beginning of the game there are numbers from 1 to 9. The player is required to fill the empty cells with numbers from 1 to 9 so that in each row, in each column and in each small square 3 × 3, each number would appear only once.

The difficulty of Sudoku depends on the number of filled cells and the methods that need to be applied to solve it. The simplest ones are solved deductively: there is always at least one cell with only one number.

The Dhaka version of the game has 3 difficulty levels:
- easy - 38 numbers,
- medium - 32 numbers,
- hard - 29 numbers.
