What is the Bible?
The Bible is the account of God's action in the world and his purpose with all creation. The Bible was written over sixteen centuries and is the work of more than forty human authors. It is an incredible collection of 66 books with very different styles, all containing the message that God intended us to have.
This collection of booklets contains an amazing variety of literary styles. It tells many stories about the lives of good and bad people, about battles and travels, about the life of Jesus and about the activity of the early church. It comes to us in the form of narratives and dialogues, proverbs and parables, songs and allegories, history and prophecy.
The stories in the Bible were generally not written as they happened. Rather, they were passed on by word of mouth for years before they were finally written down. However, the same themes can be found throughout the book. Along with the diversity, there is also a remarkable unity throughout the entire work.
What is the Bible? Well, in addition to all of the above, the Bible is:
A guide to living life to the fullest. It gives us a road map for the dangerous journey of life. Or, to put it another way, on our journey across the ocean of life, the Bible is an anchor.
