Liga 1 also known as BRI Liga 1 due to sponsorship reasons by Bank Rakyat Indonesia,[1] is the first tier professional league in the Indonesian football league system. Liga 1 is attended by 18 clubs and uses a promotion and relegation system, with PT Liga Indonesia Baru as the official league operator.
The top caste of the professional football league in Indonesia began in the 2008-09 season, initially formed under the name Indonesia Super League (Indonesian Super League) until 2015.[2] Prior to the reform in 2008, national competitions used a tournament format. Liga 1 started in 2017 as the first rebrand of the league.[2] Liga Indonesia will start in 2023 as a second rebranding.[3]
As many as forty clubs have competed in the top caste of Indonesian football since the start of the modern era in 2008 as the Indonesia Super League. Eight teams have been crowned champions, with Persipura Jayapura being the team with the most titles, namely three times in the 2009, 2011 and 2013 seasons.
