Indoor Health Description
This app includes indoor plants which purify air. Over 100 air-cleaning plants are included which not only effectively remove pollutants from the indoor environment but also improve health and breathing problems.

Major indoor pollutants are asbestos, carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, trichloroethylene and xylene. Ammonia, lead (Pb), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), radon and dust are also toxic like other pollutants. Their major sources are paints, paint removers, cleansers, computer monitors, air fresheners, aerosol sprays, wood preservatives, insect repellents, varnishes and car cosmetics. Many of these indoor pollutants are toxic for health and can seriously affect nervous and respiratory systems upon exposure for a longer time.

Asbestos containing products are commonly used for building constructions and insulation. Long-term exposure to asbestos may cause lung cancer and breathing problems. Radon may also enter through building materials. Exposure to radon may result in cough, pain in the chest and difficulty in breathing. Ammonia is another indoor pollutant which is found in window cleaners, furniture polish, drain and toilet cleaners, glass and stainless-steel cleaners. It may lead to the burning of eyes, nose, throat and respiratory system and may also cause lung damage and in severe cases may also lead to death. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) produced through gas stoves, kerosene heaters, welding and tobacco smoke results in damage to lungs, respiratory infections and asthma. Household dust and paints may contain Pb particles which can cause brain and kidney damage.

CO may be produced in homes through burning of stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, gas and water heaters, dryers, and generators. Long exposure to CO causes loss of consciousness, stomach discomfort, breathing difficulties and brain damage.

Formaldehyde is used in the construction of household items, including furniture and cosmetics. It is also produced through burning of natural gas, kerosine, gasoline and wood. Tobacco smoking is another important source of formaldehyde in homes. It can cause irritation of skin, air, nose and throat. Exposure to high levels of formaldehyde for longer may also cause cancer. Xylene and toluene are also volatile compounds which are found in many household items like paints, lacquers, adhesives, thinners and rust controlling chemicals. Exposure to them for a longer time may result in difficulty in breathing, weak memory and damage to liver and kidneys.

Professor Dr. Aisha Saleem Khan from Forman Christian College University, Lahore has created this app to benefit people about selection of indoor plants which can keep environment clean and free from indoor pollutants.
