Chess is a game for 2 players, divided into two colors, usually White (or light color) and Black (or dark color). Each player holds 16 pieces including 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Statues, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen and 1 King.
The white player is always the first to go; the other holds the black piece. The Queens and Rooks are called heavy pieces, and the Statues and Horses are called light pieces. The specific shape of each chess piece, you follow in the picture below. Depending on the board, chess pieces can have a number of different shapes.
