The BMW M3 is the high-performance model of the BMW 3 Series, produced by BMW M since 1985. Since 2014, the M3 has been solely produced in the sedan body style, due to the coupé and convertible models being rebranded as the 4 Series range, making the high-performance variant the M4.
The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 Series and was intended to be a homologation special to satisfy the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring rules, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built.
BMW M3 models have been produced throughout the E30, E36, E46, E90 / E92 / E93, and F80 generations of the 3-Series and in coupe, sedan, and cabriolet body styles. The M3 is the model of the 3-Series equipped with more powerful and responsive engines, advanced handling, suspension and braking systems, aerodynamic body enhancements, and interior and exterior styling with a tricolor "M" (Motorsport) emblem.
The BMW M3 is the only car in motorsports to have earned more respect than the Porsche 911, and it is also the most successful touring and grand touring car ever raced. The vehicle's biggest rivals are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG and the Audi RS4.
It is the BMW M3 version specially designed for races. This model, which means "Coupe Sport Leichtbau", can be defined as "Light Sport Coupe". In 2004, only 1383 units were produced on the E46 chassis model.
The biggest difference from other M3s is that in addition to the carbon fiber and hard plastic used for lightening purposes, the features that are thought to create weight in the vehicle such as electric windows, air conditioning, and radio are absent. In this way, the vehicle has been lightened by approximately 110 kg.
