Billiards, also known as cue sports, is a family of games played on a pool table with six pockets along its rails. The primary objective of using a cue ball is to drop balls into the pockets. "cue sports" generally refers to one of the three popular games: Snooker, Pool, and Billiards.

In the United States, "Pool" has become a common name for all pocket-billiards games, even though the original games were played on carom-less, pocket-less tables. "billiards" refers to all games played on a billiards table, pocketed or not.

Snooker is another cue sport that emerged in the late 19th century. It traces its roots back to English billiards, which dates back to the 16th century. Snooker is played with 22 balls and mixes attacking and defensive play. It is similar to English billiards but uses the same equipment as Pool.

The first professional annual championships for Billiards were held in 1878, with the dominant form being 4-Ball. American 4-ball was the dominant American pool game until the 1870s. Billiards is played by two players using three balls, two of which are cue balls, one for each player. English billiards is played with three balls, one white, one white with dots, and one red.
