In language, the word fidyah comes from the Arabic word ÝÏì which means giving property to redeem someone
"(It is called) Fadaa when giving wealth to redeem someone."
"Al-Fidyah and al-Fida' are a lord who frees his captives who are infidels or Muslims in return for (ransom) a number of treasures."2
"Wealth or the like used to free a prisoner or the like, so that he is released from his status as a prisoner or the like."
So, basically the word fidyah is indeed a term used in the context of redemption. We can see this in the Koran, where Allah SWT uses the word fidyah in His word when telling the story of Prophet Ibrahim AS who was ordered to slaughter his son Prophet Ismail AS.
"And We ransomed the child with a large sacrifice. (QS. al-Shaffat: 107).
