Deepwoken is a brutal roguelike action RPG where permadeath is always one mistake away. Every attribute point you invest is permanent, and a poorly planned character can cost you dozens of hours of progress when they die for good. That's why understanding how to build your character isn't just useful—it's essential for survival.
This guide covers everything you need to know about building in Deepwoken: attributes, talents, attunements, oaths, the Shrine of Order, and the common mistakes that sink most new players. No external tools. No third-party planners. Just pure, in-game knowledge.

Understanding Attributes
Attributes are the foundation of every build. You start with 15 free investment points at character creation, and by Power 20 you'll have a total of 330 points to distribute.

Key thresholds: 25 for Charm Casting, 40 for Golden Tongue, 55 for the full Charm Casting tree, 60 for Manipulator, 75 for Unnecessary Theatrics, 90 for Cult of Personality.
Weapon Attributes
Weapons fall into three categories—Light, Medium, and Heavy—each with its own attribute for investment. Heavy weapons are recommended for PvE content like Diluvian or Hell Mode; the Enforcer's Axe and Pale Briar are top choices. Attributes can be increased to a soft cap of 75 points and unbounded to a hard cap of 100.
Races
Races are randomly assigned at character creation. You can reroll for150 Knowledge. Here's how the races rank:

Attunements and Mantras
Deepwoken has seven attunements: Flamecharm, Frostdraw, Thundercall, Galebreath, Shadowcast, Ironsing, and Bloodrend. You can also choose to be Attunement-less, which gives you an extra 10 investment points to distribute freely.
Mantras are upgraded at Attunement Trainers hidden around the map. Check out our Deepwoken map guide if you need help tracking them down. Each trainer requires intervals of 20 points in your attunement to upgrade mantras:
- 20 points= Level 2 mantra
- 40 points= Level 3 mantra
- 60 points= Level 4 mantra
- 80 points= Level 5 mantra (Attunement Unbound)
Going 75+ in an attunement also grants +10 HP. Mantras scale with your investment—most attuned mantras have 2.75 investment scaling.
Some mantras are hybrid abilities that scale off either attunement stat. These can be upgraded at either attunement's trainer. The Mystic can be used to guarantee hybrid mantras in your next whisper hand if requirements are met.
Talents

Talents are perks gained primarily when increasing your Power. They come as either permanent passive effects or active abilities. Some talents can also be obtained through quests or equipment.
Critical Rules
- Talent requirements always end in 5 or 0(15, 20, 25, etc.). Never waste points on numbers like 23 or 27.
- You won't see a talent until you meet its requirement. If you want a talent that needs 40 Strength, it simply won't appear in your options until you have 40 Strength.
- Some talents are mutually exclusive. Taking one may lock you out of another.

Oath Progression Skip
If you've fully progressed any Oath at least once on your account, you can skip its progression next time for 10 Knowledge. This is account-wide. Some oaths like Blade harper and Soulbreaker cannot currently be skipped.
The Shrine of Order

The Shrine of Order is the most important mechanic in build-making. Located in Songseeker Mines and the Temple of Hearts, it allows you to:
- Average your stats to make them more equal
- Keep talents even if you no longer meet their requirements
- Effectively have more points than intended
Requirements and Restrictions
- Power 8+required
- No Oath (Oathless is allowed)
- Costs 10 Knowledge
- Can only be used once per character
How It Works
- Any core attribute or weapon stat cannot lose more than 25 points
- Attunement stats can lose any amount
- Only stats with at least 1 point invested are ordered
- Racial points don't count—you must invest 1 point manually for the Shrine to recognize the stat
After Using the Shrine
- Some talents may lose effectiveness if you drop below requirements
- Mantras are downgraded to the appropriate level
- Weapons are automatically unequipped if you drop below requirements
- Outfits stay equipped even if you drop below requirements
Strategic Advice
"90 attunement + weapon pre-shrine is the worst—you won't be able to do good damage. At least keep 1 attunement at 80 for 5-star mantra"
Experienced players invest heavily into specific stats to grab their best talents, then use the Shrine as soon as possible to redistribute. Shrine at low Power—if you wait too long, you'll end up with mediocre stats across the board.
Traits
Traits provide additional scaling. The standard recommendation is:
- 6 Vitality— HP scaling
- 2-3 Erudition— Mantra investment scaling
- 3-4 Proficiency— Weapon scaling
Common Build Mistakes
1. Ignoring Fortitude
50 Fortitude is the survival baseline. Without Exoskeleton and To the Finish, you'll get melted in both PvP and PvE.
2. Wasting Points
Talent requirements end in 5 or 0. Don't leave stats at 23, 27, or other wasted values.
3. Over-Investing in Multiple Attunements
Unless you're building specifically for PvE, focus on 1-2 attunements. Spreading too thin dilutes your mantra damage.
4. Forgetting the Shrine of Order
The Shrine is essential for optimised builds. Plan around it from the start.
5. Shrining Too Late
Don't wait until high Power to use the Shrine. You'll end up with mediocre stats across all attributes.
6. Ignoring 25 Charisma
For just 25 points, Charm Casting gives +10% damage dealt and -10% damage taken. It's one of the most efficient investments in the game.
7. Going 90 Attunement + 90 Weapon Pre-Shrine
This leaves you unable to deal good damage. Keep at least one attunement at 80 for 5-star mantras, and plan your Shrine usage carefully.
Progression Tips
- For your first 10-15 levels, focus intensely on reaching the attribute thresholds for your most desired early-game talents.
- Don't spread your points too thin early. Specialise first, then diversify.
- Trial of One → Ministry → Shrine → Starswept/Crypt is a common progression path.
- Deepbound origin is excellent for death-saving and Layer 2 content.
- Lone Warrior origin gives more damage and EXP for solo players.
Conclusion
Building in Deepwoken follows a simple logic:
Define your goal → choose your key talents → check their requirements → allocate attributes → refine with the Shrine of Order.
Every attribute point should have a clear purpose. Think about how you want to play, then work backward to figure out which talents and stats support that playstyle. Plan around the Shrine of Order from the start. Don't ignore Fortitude. And never, ever waste points on numbers that don't end in 5 or 0.
The difference between a build that carries you to endgame and one that leaves you restarting at Power 8 isn't luck—it's planning.
Good luck in the world of Deepwoken. Block, parry, and dodge.
