Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard Guide: Ability, Freeze Effect & How to Use

Nipun Gimhan
|2026-09-17

If you have ever watched a Hog, Elite Barbs, or Graveyard push walk through your tower because your Ice Wizard only slowed them, Hero Ice Wizard is the card that finally lets you stop the clock. Hero Ice Wizard is not a new troop with new damage numbers. He keeps the classic 3-Elixir Ice Wizard kit and adds one of the most layered Hero abilities in the game. Get the timing wrong and you spend elixir for nothing. Get it right and you lock an entire pocket of the Arena for up to seven seconds. This Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard guide breaks down Frosty Fella, the freeze effect, the Snowman, and how to use the Season 87 Hero without wasting 2 Elixir on a dummy press.

What Is Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard?

Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard is the 17th Hero card, arriving with Season 87 “Minion Academy”. He is the Hero version of Ice Wizard: same deploy cost, same range, same splash slow, plus the Frosty Fella ability.

This card occupies the Hero / Champion slot. You cannot run Hero Ice Wizard and regular Ice Wizard in the same deck. Ability use is single-use per deployment after the August 2026 Hero rules change, so you plan one freeze window per life, not a cooldown loop.

And before you get used to Hero Ice Wizard, it is always recommended to learn how to get heroes in Clash Royale as it helps you to understand Hero fragments, Pass Royale choices, and the Hero slot. So you are not guessing how Frosty Fella even appears on your bar.

Hero Ice Wizard vs Regular Ice Wizard

Hero Ice Wizard is not as same as your regular Ice Wizard card. They have significant differences to them as follows:

Role

Splash support / stall

Splash support + freeze lock

Ice shards, air & ground

The extra 2 Elixir is not “Ice Wizard plus Freeze.” Freeze is a 4-Elixir spell with a 4-second lock and a 3-tile radius. Frosty Fella is cheaper, lasts longer if the Snowman lives, hits a tighter 2.5-tile pocket, and can be shut off if the opponent pops the Snowman.

Hero Ice Wizard Stats You Need Before You Press Ability

Wanna learn the stats to get ready for the press ability? Then here they are:

Hero Ice Wizard (Base Kit)

  • Elixir: 3
  • Targets: Air and ground
  • Range: 5.5 tiles
  • Hit speed: 1.7 seconds
  • Splash radius: 1.5 tiles
  • Slow duration: 2.5 seconds
  • Slow amount: 30%
  • Level 11 HP / damage: 688 HP, 89 area damage

Frosty Fella (Ability)

Freeze duration

The Log’s 268 damage one-shots a full-HP Snowman. That single interaction decides whether your freeze is a 7-second lockdown or a 1-second joke.

Frosty Fella Ability: How It Actually Works

This is the part most first-day Hero Ice Wizard players will throw games on. Pressing Frosty Fella spends 2 Elixir immediately. It does not drop the Snowman on the spot. The ability arms Hero Ice Wizard. The Snowman only appears when he hits a target that is already under his slowdown. If he has not tagged anyone yet, you paid 2 Elixir for a charged button and zero freeze.

Frosty Fella (Ability) .png

You can use this sequence every time:

  1. Place Hero Ice Wizard so his first shot will land on the troop (or tower) you want frozen.
  2. Wait until the shard connects and the slow VFX is on the target.
  3. Press Frosty Fella for 2 Elixir.
  4. His next valid hit on a slowed target spawns the Snowman behind that target.
  5. Everything inside the 2.5-tile burst takes damage and freezes.
  6. The freeze stays up until the Snowman dies or its 7-second lifetime ends.

You also can arm the ability before combat. That is the hidden tempo play: drop him in the back, pay 2 Elixir while you still have a buffer, then walk him into the fight already loaded. Other Heroes have a tight activation window. Hero Ice Wizard can bank the press.

Visual tell: ice crystals sit on his shoulders while Frosty Fella is unused. After the press, those crystals become the Snowman on the next legal hit.

What Counts as a Valid Target

  • A troop or building Hero Ice Wizard has already slowed.
  • The Princess / Crown Tower if he is shooting it. The Snowman walks behind the tower and can freeze it.
  • Not a fresh troop that walked in after the burst. New units are immune until they take a new Ice Wizard hit and you somehow retrigger, which you cannot do on the same life.

Building-only troops ignore the Snowman because it is classified as a unit. Hog Rider, Giant, Royal Giant, and Ram Rider will not peel off a tower to punch the snowman. That is good when you freeze support. That is bad when you hoped the tank would waste swings on the doll.

Freeze Effect Explained (This Is the Whole Card)

The freeze effect is the reason you opened a Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard guide. Everything else is setup.

When the Snowman pops, every enemy already inside the 2.5-tile radius is frozen. They cannot move or attack. The lock lasts as long as the Snowman is alive, up to 7 seconds. Damage to the Snowman shortens that window because its HP is already ticking down with lifetime decay.

Rules that separate it from the Freeze spell are:

  • Snapshot freeze: Units that spawn after the burst, or walk into the circle later, are not frozen.
  • Sticky freeze: If Tornado yanks a frozen troop out of the circle, it stays frozen. The area is not a lingering ice puddle; the status is on the unit.
  • Snowman is physical: Tornado, knockback, and even Evolved Snowball can move the Snowman. Move it off a clump and you can waste your own freeze value.
  • No curse transforms: Mother Witch and Goblin Curse do not convert the Snowman.
  • Your own push is not auto-frozen by the burst in the same way the TV Royale line framed the enemy push. The ability text is written as an enemy lock. Still place him so the 2.5-tile circle does not sit on a fight you need your units to keep swinging in.

Compared with Freeze: 2 Elixir vs 4, 7 seconds vs 4, 2.5 tiles vs 3, and a destructible off-switch. Hero Ice Wizard wins duration and cost. Freeze wins reliability and radius. Smart decks may still run both if the extra slot is worth a second lock.

How to Use Hero Ice Wizard in Real Matches

Depending on the way you use Hero Ice Wizard, the real match usage for this card will be varied:

Defense: The High-Value Press

Here, the best Frosty Fella uses are defensive, because you choose the clump.

  • Evo Elite Barbarians: Slow the pack, arm the ability, freeze them on the tower tile. Hero Ice Wizard plus the Princess Tower can full-counter them if the Snowman lives long enough for the tower to finish the job.
  • Hog + support: Freeze the support (Ice Spirit, Musketeer, Firecracker, Witch), not only the Hog. The Hog may keep running if it sits outside the 2.5-tile burst.
  • Graveyard: Freeze the tank and the first skeleton wave together. Do not press until Ice Wizard has tagged the tank.

Graveyard.png

  • Bridge spam: Freeze Bandit / Ram / Royal Ghost in one pocket so your Knight or Valkyrie does not trade down.
  • Lava / Balloon: Freeze the Balloon and the escort if they overlap. A lonely Balloon on the far side of the tower may sit outside 2.5 tiles.

Place Hero Ice Wizard opposite-lane or in the pocket so the first shard hits the highest-value body, then press. Do not drop him on top of a Mini P.E.K.K.A. and pray.

Offense: Freeze the Tower, Then Commit

If Hero Ice Wizard is already shooting the Crown Tower, Frosty Fella parks the Snowman behind the tower and can freeze the tower itself. That is your Balloon, Miner, Hog, or Graveyard window. The tower freeze is shorter the instant they Log the Snowman, so bait The Log first or accept a 1–2 second lock instead of seven.

Do not lead a beatdown with a 5-Elixir ability package (3 + 2) unless the freeze creates a positive trade. Hero Ice Wizard is still a low-DPS support card. The freeze is the damage multiplier for everyone else.

Pre-Load in the Back

The button does not require a target at press time,so ou can:

  • Cycle him behind the King Tower
  • Pay 2 Elixir when you are at 8–10 Elixir
  • Walk him forward already armed

That play is unique to this Hero Ice Wizard ability. Use it in single Elixir when you know the next defense is a swarm or a dual-lane commit.

Best Pairings and Deck Roles for Hero Ice Wizard

Hero Ice Wizard wants cards that punish a frozen clump or protect the Snowman.

Strong Partners

  • Tornado: Stack troops into 2.5 tiles, then freeze. Frozen units stay frozen even after the pull.

Tornado.jpg

  • Valkyrie / Executioner / Baby Dragon: Splash that deletes a locked pack.

Valkyri.jpgExecutioner.jpgBaby Dragon.jpg

  • Graveyard / Balloon / Hog Rider: Win conditions that need a stunned tower or stunned defender.

Graveyard.jpgBalloon.jpgHog Rider.jpg

  • Tesla / Cannon / Tombstone: Buildings that finish what the freeze started.

Tesla.jpgCannon.jpgTombstone.jpg

  • Small spell bait: If they must save Log or Arrows for the Snowman, Goblin Barrel and Princess become free.

Awkward Partners

  • Another Ice Wizard (illegal).
  • Decks that already spend 4 Elixir on Freeze every push and have no leftover slot for the Hero tax.
  • Pure cycle lists that cannot afford a 5-Elixir defensive package.

Classic Ice Wizard homes still work: splash Graveyard control, beatdown support, and midrange control. The Hero version just converts “stall” into “stop.”

How to Counter Hero Ice Wizard and Frosty Fella

You are not trying to kill the Wizard first. You are trying to delete the Snowman here:

Counter

Why it works

The Log

268 damage, one-shots 266 HP Snowman

Arrows

Clears Snowman plus nearby swarm

Fireball / Poison

Snowman plus the Wizard if they overlap

Zap

Does not reliably one-shot; do not waste it as your only answer

Mini P.E.K.K.A. / Prince

Dive the Wizard before he tags a target

Spell cycle

Force him to ability with no Snowman protection

Building-targeting tanks will ignore the Snowman and keep hitting your tower. That is the cleanest way to ignore the doll: do not give him a support clump inside 2.5 tiles. Spread your push. Drop the second wave after the burst so the new troops are unfrozen.

If you are the Hero Ice Wizard player, treat Log and Arrows as the real enemies. Ability after those spells are out of cycle, or hide the Snowman behind a tank so splash has to clip your unit too.

How to Unlock Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard

Season 87 Premium Pass Royale puts Hero Ice Wizard on the first milestone as the season’s main Hero. The Pass choice is typically:

  • Hero Ice Wizard
  • or 6 Evolution Wild Shards
  • or 1,500 Rare Wild Cards

After the season, expect the usual shop route around 200 Hero Coins. You still need an open Hero slot and you still cannot field the base Ice Wizard beside him.

People Also Ask

Can Hero Ice Wizard freeze Evolved cards through their extra HP?

Yes. Freeze is a status, not a damage threshold. Evo Elite Barbs, Evo Knight, and Evo Skeletons still lock if they are inside the 2.5-tile burst when the Snowman spawns. Extra HP only matters for whether they survive the 89 spawn damage, not whether they can swing while frozen.

Does the Snowman count as a troop for Monk reflect, Spirit Empress, or Mother Witch?

It is a troop for targeting and movement, but Mother Witch and Goblin Curse cannot transform it. Treat it as a dummy body with a special immunity list rather than a normal summon.

Should you replace Freeze with Hero Ice Wizard in IceBow or Graveyard Freeze?

Only if you need the Hero slot and can live with a Log-able off switch. Freeze still covers a wider circle and cannot be sniped. Many players will keep Freeze and use Hero Ice Wizard as the second lock in control, not as a 1-for-1 spell swap.

Conclusion

And that is all. Clash Royale Hero Ice Wizard is Ice Wizard with a conditional, destructible, 7-second freeze attached to a 2-Elixir Snowman. The ability is Frosty Fella. The skill is not the button. The skill is landing a slow, spending elixir only when a clump exists, and keeping The Log off that 266 HP doll long enough for your tower or win condition to finish the fight. Learn that loop and Season 87’s coldest Hero stops being a gimmick and starts being a lock while also claiming your Clash Royale codes.
