2021-10-07

Dragon Quest Dai: A Hero's Bond is the latest installment of the Dragon Quest games from Square Enix on mobile devices, and in this article, we'll be giving you the guide to unlocking characters and getting you up to speed in the gameplay.

So without wasting any more time, let's kick off our DQ Dai guide that we hope you gain a lot from.

Unlock as many characters as possible

DQ Dai: A Hero's Bonds Character Unlock

There are a lot of characters to unlock in DQ Dai, and there are special ones you can unlock by going through the Play Guide. After completing certain episodes, you will unlock more characters and recruit them to your team. Some of these characters possess special abilities that you will want to have on your team.

All you need to unlock these characters is to clear the indicated episodes mentioned in the Play Guide.

Build a formidable team

You have to put in extra effort to build a powerful team that will see you dominate enemies on the battlefield. Starting out, there are characters that you don't need to worry about unlocking, such as Dai. You will go through the game's tutorial with Dai and come out of it with the character as well.

Some of the most powerful characters to aim for are Maam, a free unit that you can recruit to your team after completing the 8th episode of the Bonding Journey. Avan is also a free-to-play unit that is no stranger to you, as you've met him from the game tutorial. To recruit him, you'll have to clear the Avan event to get him right away. Then Zennosh, another powerful character that you can recruit at the early stages of the game.

Equip your characters with the best equipment

DQ Dai: A Hero's Bonds Equipment

In order to get the best out of your characters, you will have to equip them with the best equipment ahead of every battle. Using powerful equipment gives their stats real boosts on the battlefield. Failing to use equipment in battle will see your characters suffer in the hands of enemies on the battlefield.

Additionally, equipping weapons and other things isn't enough. Remember that upgrading these equipment is also a very important part of the game. They will not be very efficient if you don't upgrade them, even if you equip them for battle. You can upgrade your items from the Upgrade section in the game. We recommend setting the upgrade to Auto, which lets the game automatically upgrade an item for you.

Weapons are not the only upgradable equipment either; you have to upgrade your armor, your pants, and your clothes as some clothes possess better blocking and can resist enemy attacks than most. As you reach higher levels in the game, you get to a point where you will no longer need level 1 tier weapons or clothes, so in this case, you can select all you don't need and sort of merge or scrap them for Bronze Weapon Fragments which you can use to get special items from the Weapons Exchange. It is also another way to upgrade your character's skills and equipment.

Bonding Halo and Ally Boards

The Bonding Halo lets you equip soul crystals. They are materials that will allow your character to have increased performance on the battlefield due to the bonding boost you will get afterward. Depending on the character you're using, it is better to bond them with corresponding soul crystals.

For instance, if you're using a physical unit, it is better to have items that will boost the defense. You can equip up to 3 soul crystals, and you can have them be of the same element so they can be of high resonance.

Ally Boards, on the other hand, are also relevant. For avid gamers, this is not a new feature. Ally Boards helps you upgrade your stats and get you new traits that can be quite helpful as it improves your character's overall efficiency. Players can also get new rank up from Ally Boards which allows them to rank up to higher levels.

The Ally Board is important in ranking up your characters; otherwise, they will remain stuck at a particular level for an extended period of time. So it is best to keep on unlocking more and more boards until there's pretty much nothing left to unlock from the Ally Board.

Vocation Changing

DQ Dai: A Hero's Bonds Gameplay

Change Vocation or Vocation Changing is switching from one cast to another. You can switch from Hero to Warrior or Hero to Maze or Hero to Priest. Each cast has its respective levels. If your Hero character is at level 10, for instance, and you decide to switch to a Priest cast, you will be penalized for the switch and brought all the way back to level 1.

You'd also have to equip all equipment all over again, but there's also an auto equip button that you can help you Auto equip the best items for each cast. Hero cast is the best because you get to be an all-rounder with decent defense and offense. Warriors are prone to taking hits and retaliating with high attacks of their own. Mages are magical maestros adept at attacks from the back ranks that affect wide areas. And finally, we have Priests; they are healers that provide support for other team members.

After carefully choosing the vocation you wish to play with, you can then equip your skill and special moves. These cannot be set automatically and needs to equip manually. So depending on the vocation you choose to play with, that will decide the special move and skills you choose to use in battle that will be most effective.

Choosing your main character and ally

DQ Dai: A Hero's Bonds Gameplay Guide

You can have a total of four players in a team, but you can only have two playable characters on the battlefield, with the first being the leader while the second can act as your partner or ally. You can use these characters in battle, like switching between them against enemies, giving you an advantage on the battlefield.

The remaining two characters left out of battle act as supporting characters or sidekicks in your team. They're necessary and can be helpful as they can automatically use their skills if necessary. And if you wish to partner up with one of them instead, you can just click on them and set them as your partner. You should always partner up with powerful characters as you will control them and manually put their abilities to use on the battlefield.
